VR or virtual reality as you may call it is the next big thing and every tech giant wants to conquer the “VR Game” as it is. So does the social networking giants such as Facebook.
Facebook hired Xiaomi (a Chinese electronics company) executive Hugo Barra to head its virtual reality efforts including the Oculus team.
In a post, Mark Zuckerberg said,
“I’ve known Hugo for a long time, starting when he helped develop the Android operating system, to the last few years he’s worked at Xiaomi in Beijing bringing innovative devices to millions of people.”
“Hugo shares my belief that virtual and augmented reality will be the next major computing platform. They’ll enable us to experience completely new things and be more creative than ever before. Hugo is going to help build that future, and I’m looking forward to having him on our team,” he added.
Barra will be joining Facebook as vice president of virtual reality in the next few months. He started as a group product manager for Google Mobile Team in 2008 in London. And joined the Android team in 2010 and then after three years left Google for Xiaomi to join the Chinese company’s senior management team as its vice president of international.
“I am excited to share my next adventure as I return to Silicon Valley.”
“Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun always says that the highest calling of an engineer is to make technology breakthroughs quickly and readily available to the widest possible spectrum of humanity. That will be my mission at Facebook and I look forward to building the future of immersive technology with Mark Zuckerberg, Brendan Trexler Iribe, Mike Schroepfer, and the visionaries in the Oculus team,” Barra said in a Facebook post.
For the record, Facebook bought Oculus VR in July 2014 for $2 billion which was paid $400 million in cash and 23.1 million shares of Facebook common stock, which were worth $1.6 billion.
The first demonstration of Oculus was of the Oculus Rift at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in June 2012.
Oculus Rift started shipping to the customers last year. Rift is a VR system that immerses the users inside an awesome virtual world.
